The Orange Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will present its annual Girls in Pearls Cotillion Gala at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church Life Center.
During this event, six lovely Debutantes from West Orange-Stark High School and Little Cypress High School will be formally introduced into society within our community.
This program has been sponsored annually by the Orange Alumnae Chapter for the past several years. The young ladies will be presented in white formal ball gowns and their escorts will wear black suits. It truly will be an evening of beauty and elegance.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on January 13, 1913, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. One of our Chapter’s programmatic thrusts is educational development which is the central focus of this program.
Our goals are to provide the participants in this program with educational scholarships to help them further their education and offer mentoring sessions which will enhance their skill sets as they move into the next phase of their lives.
This year’s participants are Zaria Johnson, Miyanna Harper-Kelly, Shamiya Scott, Taleisha Washington, Jada Wilson and Kiasia Wilson. Zaria is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dunn and Mr. Greg Johnson; Miyanna is the daughter of Ms. LaToya Kelly; Shamiya is the daughter of Kimtress Scott; Taleisha Washington is the daughter of Ms. Toky and Mr. Herzel Washington; Jada is the daughter of Ms. April Wilson and Mr. Tremaine Wilson; Kiasia Wilson is the daughter of Ms. April Wilson and Mr. Tremaine Wilson.
As a part of the mentoring program, the participants were mentored by community leaders such as Beverly Robinson, retired educator; Rev. John Jefferson, Associate Pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church; and retired federal prison guard Rev. Fred Holifield. The mentoring sessions were conducted monthly beginning in October and concluded in December.
The Cotillion participants also were honored with Mother/Daughter Holiday High Tea in mid-December. The tea was held at Mount Sinai Baptist Church which culminated with each Debutante and mother duo spotlighting their talents.
Tickets are available for the gala. This event is open to the general public to purchase for a donation of $25 which includes a dinner meal. The meal will consist of fried fish, baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, dessert, and drink. The attire for this event is semi-formal.
Come out and support the youth of our community and help the Orange Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta provide scholarships to the youth in our community. If you are unable to attend donations will be accepted.
The President of the Orange Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is Linda Lee and Anitrea Goodwin is Vice President and Chairperson of this event.
