BRIDGE CITY — After getting off to blistering starts to start their District 10-4A Division I campaigns last week, it should be quite an Orange County showdown Friday night at Larry Ward Stadium as old rivals, the Bridge City Cardinals and the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears will hook up.

The host Cardinals (1-3, 0-1) are coming off a decisive 34-22 road victory over the Cleveland Indians to nab their first win of the season while the Bears (2-2, 1-0) tortured arguably the 10-4A favorite Silsbee Tigers 58-38 at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.

The Cardinals had a much-needed bye week prior to the Cleveland game as they were able to nurse some injuries and got a lot of reps to get things lined up at practices after facing one of the toughest non-district slates in Southeast Texas which saw them fall to West Orange-Stark, Newton and Jasper.

Bridge City, defending 10-4A champions, were able to pull away from the Indians with a pair of touchdowns in the second half to go up 34-14 before the Indians punched in a late score.

Senior quarterback Caleb DuBois and senior tailback Max Baker led a pounding Cardinal rushing attack at Cleveland. Both scored a pair of touchdowns as Baker got loose on a 70-yard touchdown sprint and a 20-yard galloping score while DuBois scored on a 49-yard keeper and one-yard score.

The Cardinal offense pounded out their best game of the season and sophomore fullback Andy Lara made a solid return after being injured early on in the season.

The Cardinals defense held firm against the Indians, allowing three scores, all coming from Indian Dylan Reeves.

Meanwhile, the Bears were clicking on all cylinders against Silsbee, racking up 580 yards of total offense as quarterback Ethan McCollum and backs Chris Winters and J’Lon Douglas all went over 100 yards rushing. LC-M piled up 460 yards on the ground as their offensive line controlled the Tigers defernsive front in the trenches.

Winters rushed for 226 yards and three scores against the Tigers and has 376 yards on the season. Douglas bolted for 104 yards on 12 carries and has over 200 yards for the year. McCollum passed for 120 yards and ran for 121 more. He has 256 yards rushing for the season and 443 yards passing.

Receiviers Dameon Morris (15-263) and Katon Brown (14-208) are both versatile receivers.

The Bears are churning out 359 yards a game while their defense is allowing 276.3.

This will be the fourth meeting in four years between the two schools.

LC-M notched a 34-7 win in 2014. The Cardinals have produced two high-scoring wins the last two years including 62-35 in 2015 and 54-28 last season.

Baker had 134 yards on just five carries against the Bears last season as the Cardinals had more than 400 yards rushing.

LC-M will host Huffman next week while the Cardinals will make a trek to Silsbee.

Other 10-4A games this week includes Silsbee (1-4, 0-1) at Navasota (3-3, 1-0) and Clevleand (2-3, 0-1) at Huffman (2-2, 0-1)..
