Lady Cats net 2nd place with tight win at LC-M

LITTLE CYPRESS— The Orangefield Lady Bobcats clinched second-place in the District 22-4A race Friday night but it certainly wasn’t easy as they got all they could handle from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears as they squeezed out a 51-50 victory.
The Lady Bobcats (6-3 in district) got the game-winning bucket inside from post Cameron Choate with 11 seconds left.
LC-M’s Maddie Garrison drained two free-throws with 0:25 remaining to put the Lady Bears on top.
The loss dropped the Lady Bears to 4-5 in district as they sit in a three-way tie with Bridge City and Hamshire-Fannett for the third-place spot.
Orangefield hosts last-place West Orange-Stark Tuesday while LC-M visits first-place Silsbee.
The Lady Bobcats held a 37-29 lead going into the fourth quarter but the Lady Bears staged a big rally behind point guard Chelsea Perry. Perry, who scored a game-high 18 points, tallied 11 of her points in the final eight minutes to get the Lady Bears back in it.
Choate was equal to the task for the Lady Bobcats as she bruised her way to seven points to keep the Lady Bobcats in it.
Choate finished with a team-high 16 points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Bears led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter as Perry and Alyssa McKellar scored four points apiece. McKellar finished with six points and snared a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Bears 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 24-22 lead into intermission.
Lady Bobcat Faith Fregia scored all 12 of her points in the period to ignite the Orangefield offense.
Asjah Harper-Kelly had four points in the period for the Lady Bears and finished with 12 points and five boards. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Orangefield was able to extend its lead to eight at the end of the third quarter with a 13-7 run. Choate and Jamie Deutsch, who finished with 11 points and five rebounds scored four points apiece.
Turnovers proved costly for the Lady Bears, who finished with 19. Meanwhile, the Lady Bobcats protected the ball well throughout the night, finishing with just six.
The Lady Bears controlled the boards with a 40-24 rebounding edge. Renna Toomey had nine rebounds for the Lady Bears while Garrison hauled in five.
LC-M finished 23-of-34 from the free-throw line while the Lady Bobcats converted just 18-of-34.
