Special to The Leader

Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD hosted a cyber safety presentation for parents and staff on Monday, November 14, at Little Cypress Junior High. FBI Special Agent Chris Day with EduGard was the speaker. Special Agent Day addressed a variety of cyber safety topics, including apps, social media, and other digital activities that have the potential to put students at risk.

He stressed the importance of parents being aware of what apps are on their children’s phones and other electronic devices and the importance of talking to students about what is inappropriate and what to do if someone sends an inappropriate message to them. He also suggested that parents Google their children’s apps that are unfamiliar to them for additional information.

One of the steps the LCM District has taken to provide a safe digital environment for its students is to subscribe to TexQuest, an online resource to easily access the educational sites that students need for research, homework, and other projects. The sites are vetted to be age-appropriate, as well. Parents can go to the right front page of the District website, www.lcmcisd.org, for TexQuest logon information.

Some of the sites that were suggested to help parents be more aware are www.onguardonline.gov, www.netsmartz.org, which has videos for teens and younger children, and the EduGard Facebook page at www.facebook.com/edugardsetx.
