FREE Mayhaw Berries

 The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the mayhaw trees at the chamber are full of ripening berries.  They will continue to ripen for the next couple weeks.  The Chamber invites the community to help themselves to the ripe berries while they last.  The trees are located next to the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce at 150 W. Pre K and Kindergarten Roundup

Orangefield Elementary School, 10288 FM 105, is holding Pre K and Kindergarten Roundup from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24.

Parents, please bring:

  • Current immunization record
  • Child’s original birth certificate
  • Child’s Social Security Card
  • Proof of residence (electric, water or gas statement)
  • Valid driver’s license of parent/guardian
  • Income verification (For Pre-K ONLY)

Future Kindergarten students must be turning 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2019. For our Pre-K program children must be turning 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2019 and meet income-based requirements.

 

Cajun Chicken Fundraiser

Orange County Disaster Rebuild has partnered with Tuffy’s Eatery for a Cajun Chicken Fundraiser from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Thursday, April 25 at Orange County Convention and Expo Center. Plates include Cajun Chicken with blackberry sauce, sausage link, green beans, potato salad and roll for $10 a plate. Delivery is available for orders of 10 plates or more. All proceeds will go towards assisting individuals and families with unmet needs from Tropical Storm Harvey.

 

2019 Tour of Gardens

Orange County Master Gardeners 2019 Tour of Gardens is 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. Tour nine beautiful gardens in the Orange and Bridge City area. Tickets are $6 each and may be purchased at Orange County AgriLife Ext. office by Friday. It is located at 11475 FM 1442, Orange or call 409-882-7010. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of tour at any of the nine gardens.

 

Scholarships

The Cajun French Music Association of LA Inc. Gulf Coast Cajun Chapter is giving two scholarship awards again this year to two Orange County High School Seniors. Please see your school counselor for the applications and instructions. They must be returned no later than May 10, 2019. Return them to the address on the bottom of the application.

 

Crawfish Boil Cookoff

Peggy’s Place will host a Crawfish Boil Cookoff on Saturday, May 18 to benefit Toys for Tots. Door prize donations needed. If you would like to make a donation or participate, call Peggy at 409-886-1115

 

Book Sale 

The Gamma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher honorary sorority will hold a huge book sale on May 3 from 6-7 p.m. and May 4 from 8 a.m. till 1 p.m. at First Methodist Church, 501 N. Main Street in Vidor.

The sale will offer hardbacks for $1, paperbacks for 50 cents, and some plants and garage sale items.  Proceeds provide a scholarship to aid a young person in obtaining a degree in education.

 

Local Beekeeping Event

The Beaumont area Beekeepers Group will be putting on their annual free beekeeper’s event 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 5446 Beaumont Drive in Kountze, Texas. This event called SpringSting is free to the public and all area beekeepers (donations can be made to assist the group). If you plan to attend, please bring PPE as there will be many events where the bees may become a little excited, also bring lawn chairs.

 

10th Annual Golf Tournament

Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce will hold it’s 10th Annual Golf Tournament is May 6 with morning registration at 7 a.m. GOACC will donate a percentage of Net Proceeds to the Non-Profit of the Year Recipient, Gulf Coast Cajuns Chapter. Employment Courses

Vidor ISD Community Education and the Vidor Chamber of Commerce are hosting a series of courses to help you get a job.  Classes are only $5 each, so join us on Thursday evenings in the Vidor High School library at 6:30.  Coming up:  April 18 Facebook for Business and Beyond, and April 25 Customer Service. 

 

Anger Management Classes

Wells of Agape is holding Anger Management Classes start from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at Life Church Orange located at 18389 Hwy. 62 in Orange (near State Hwy. 62 and Hwy. 105 intersection) Requirement to receive a Certificate of Completion is $30 per person, cash only and covers all three nights. Must be paid prior to first class. One must attend all three Tuesday classes to receive the certificate. Senior Citizen Rally Day 50th Anniversary Celebration

We invite all Senior Citizens to join us for our red carpet event in celebration of our Golden Era of Health Senior Citizen 50th Anniversary Rally Day Tuesday, May 14th, at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Committee on Aging are celebrating Hollywood style so feel free to put your fancy clothes and celebrate with us. The doors will open at 9 am for our Seniors to visit over 40 health vendor booths followed by bingo, many door prizes, photo booth, free lunch and live music entertainment. The celebration will end at 1 p.m. Please bring all unused eyeglasses to donate the Lions Eye Bank of Texas.

 

Getting Healthy

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Orange County is holding a couple of getting healthy programs.  They can be taken as 2 programs that work together or you can take just one or the other:

 

Walk Across Texas Kick-off:  This is a free program that will start on April 22 at 5:30 pm.  Walking is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to get fit.  Start now and reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.  Join other Texans and Walk Across Texas! towards a healthier lifestyle.

Step Up, Scale Down:  In just 12 weeks, find the path to better health through this course based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines and scientific research.  Form habits to help you maintain a healthier weight, stay active, and reduce your risk for chronic diseases!  This program starts on April 23 at 5:30 pm and costs $40.

BC Public Library Seeking Donations

The Bridge City Public Library is having our annual Summer Reading Program, “2019 Universe Stories.” The Texas Reading Club is designed to encourage youth to read for pleasure and to promote library usage. The library is asking local patrons and businesses to help donating to our program. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Deadline for donations is May 31. Grief Support

Samaritan Counseling Center of Southeast Texas offers Spring 2019 Grief Support at its Orange office located at 1502 Strickland Drive Suite 4 in Orange.

Judge James B. Scales Memorial Golf Tournament

The Bridge City Chamber will hold the Judge James B. Scales Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 26, 2019, at Babe Zaharias Golf Course in Port Arthur.  Tee time is 8 a.m. for this four-person scramble. The cost is $60 per player which includes green fees, cart, beverages, food, and door prizes. Mulligans may be purchased for $5 each with a limit of two per player.     Hole sponsorships in the form of tee box signs are available for $100 each. All proceeds go to the Bridge City Chamber and Historical Museum formerly the Prairie View Teacherage. Fly-Ins

Orange County Radio Control Club meets each Tuesday and Saturday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the club’s airfield located at 10623 Farm to Market Road 1442 in Orange. Guests are welcome as long as club members are present. Learn more about building and flying remote-controlled airplanes with other enthusiasts.

 

Sack Lunch Fundraiser

Sack Lunch Fundraiser to benefit Orange County Special Angels Rodeo will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Farmer’s Mercantile, 702 West Division Street in Orange.

Lunches include link or boudin, chips, bottled water, and a dessert for $8 each. Extra links or boudin will be $4 each. Deliveries will be available ion Orange County, Beaumont, Port Arthur or Mid-County for pre-orders of 10 or more lunches.

 

GOALS


GOALS (Greater Orange Area Literacy Services) is interested in replacing several spots on the Board due to some who have moved or plan to move.  The mission of GOALS is to help those in Orange County who are unable to read to learn to read, to assist ESL (English as a Second Language) students with the learning of English, and to provide tutoring for those wishing to take the GED (General Educational Development) equivalency test to obtain a high school diploma.  GOALS is a nonprofit organization founded by Bonnie Hopperton 25 years ago.  The GOALS office may be contacted at 409.886.4311 and asking for Rhonda Powell, Director.  Powell also can give guidelines for those wishing to volunteer to tutor or possibly secure a spot on Board. 

 

Hand Quilting Demonstration

Noon Lion’s Club meeting

Noon Lion’s Club meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Domino’s Meeting/Party room located at 2107 MacArthur Drive in Orange.

 

NAACP meeting

Friends of the Bridge City Public Library meets once a month on the fourth Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Join today for only $5 per year. As a member of the Friends, you can help with fundraisers, the summer reading program, decorate Library for the holidays, scrapbook events from the year and Bayou Buddy Storytime.
