Advocates needed to fight cancer in Texas

When I meet with our lawmakers as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I know they hear my story and deeply understand why I advocate. I tell them about caring for my 96-year-old father while he battled colon cancer.   22 Years ago, we heard those words , You have cancer, and it is a day we will never forget.

My dad beat cancer because of early detection, and it was then that I knew all Texans needed access to colon cancer screenings. That’s why I’m adamant that our elected officials must support legislation that would close a loophole in Medicare that often results in surprise costs for seniors when a polyp is found during a routine colonoscopy.

I want to make sure our community knows that even though there were changes to our local Relay for Life events, ACS CAN and the cancer caregivers, survivors and patients for whom we advocate still need your voices. You may have received an ACS CAN membership renewal in the mail recently, and if so, please fill it out and send it back in. If you’re interested in joining me in the halls of government, please visit acscan.org/tx – your voice can make a difference.
