Special to The Leader

Orangefield High School senior, Katey McCall, and sophomore, Alexis Sturrock traveled to Austin to compete in the State UIL Congressional Debate on January 10. This is the first year for Congressional Debate to be a UIL sanctioned meet. Competitors draft proposed laws and position statements then prepare a speech based on bills and resolutions dealing with real-world social and political policies that they researched prior to the contest.

McCall advanced from regionals where she placed third. Sturrock was the second alternate at the state meet. McCall and Sturrock were just two of the five from Orangefield that competed at regionals.  The other participants were Tatum Garlington, Joseph Gray, and Mack Patterson.  The students were coached by Ms. Bridget Trawhon.
