OFJH football results

After a tough loss last week to Huffman the Orangefield Combined B Team look to get their first win in district play against the Shorthorns of Hamshire-Fannett.  The Bobcats jumped out to a quick start with an early Quade Clark touchdown run and 2-point conversion, but the Horns answered right back with a score of their own.  This tight contest  ended with Orangefield  turning the ball over within striking distance at 14-8.  Offensive standouts for the Bobcats were: Michael Burnett, Jarrett Savioe, and Celbee Hardy.  Defensive standouts were: Chandler Coudrain, Juan Santos, and Brennen Harris.

The 7th Grade Orangefield Bobcat football team put their undefeated record to the test this past Thursday evening as they hosted the Hamshire-Fannett Shorthorns.  The game was a defensive battle for the most part in a low scoring affair which saw the Bobcats emerge victorious, 14-0, to keep their undefeated record intact.

Both scores for the Bobcats came from the feet of Hunter Ashworth as he scored on runs of 38 and 27 yards.  Ashworth showed great vision in getting the edge and outrunning the the Horns to the end zone on both of his scores.  Great blocking up front by the stout offensive line allowed the Bobcats to control the time of possession and put sustain numerous drives.  Lane Ponfick and Diego Reyes did an excellent job on the offensive line for the Bobcats sealing the edge to allow some of the explosive plays to occur.

Defensively, for the Bobcats, it was another shutout, in what would be described as a total team effort. Hamshire-Fannett would reach the red zone twice throughout the game, but would get no further as the Bobcat defense stiffened up both times to force a turnover on downs.  Kaine Humberson sealed the game in the fourth quarter on an interception along the H-F sideline and the Cats moved to 6-0 on the year with the win.

In the final game of the night the 8^th Graders looked to be outmatched early.  The Shorthorns took the opening drive the length of the field moving the ball at will with their up tempo, no huddle offense.  Orangefield just couldn’t find an answer on that first possession and before they could gather themselves it was 7-0 in favor of Hamshire-Fannett.  The Bobcats got the ball with decent field position, but could not muster a first down and sent their punting unit out onto the field to send the ball back to the opposition.

The rest of the half saw the Cats compose themselves on defense and while H-F managed to move the ball a little, the Shorthorns could not bull their way to the end zone like they did on that first drive.  Orangefield’s offensive struggles, but with the defense stepping their game up they entered the intermission only down by a score.

The third frame saw much of the same from each team and it was not until the 4^th that the home team managed to really get the ball moving.  The Bobcats mixed in an unbalanced set to throw off the defense and peppered in just enough passes and misdirection to keep the Horns on their heels.  The Cats finally got on the board after Gunner Jones found Ryan Trahan in the back of the end zone on 4^th down from the 5 yard line.  Orangefield looked to go up on Hamshire – Fannett with a fake extra point, but an errant snap kept them from converting and taking the lead.

Orangefield then elected to kick the ball deep and play defense with the hopes that the defense would once again hold the Shorthorns and return the ball to the offense and that’s just what they did.  On 4^th and short defensive linemen Daniel Durbin and Hunter McHugh made a big tackle to keep the Bobcats hopes alive.  With little time remaining, the Cats moved down the field led by some hard-nosed running by Matthew Engle.  As the clock wound down under a minute the QB, Gunner Jones and his teammates surged across the goal line to take the lead. However, the Cats failed the conversion attempt on the next play so the score remained 12-7 with 48 seconds left in regulation.

On the ensuing drive Hampshire-Fannett threw a deep pass down their sideline which landed them on Orangefields’ 5 yard line after a Garrison Hughes tackle prevented a go ahead score.  On the final play of the game the Horns saw a bad shotgun snap land in the grasp of Daniel Durbin, sealing a thrilling come from behind victory for the Cats.  With the big district win the Bobcats evened their record at 3-3(2-1) and will travel to Sour Lake to play the Hawks next Thursday night.

 

BCJH volley

The Bridge City Middle School 7th grade volleyball red team was defeated by Orangefield last night 22-25, 25-21 and 3-15.  Caryss Carpenter was perfect from the service line with 18 super serves. Hannah Murchison, Kaylyn Dosch and Emma Gaspard all did a great job serving. Lauren Richter, Reesie Ryder and Kember Ess had pretty passes up to the setter while Hallie Boswell had some great digs.  Mallory Silva and Ressie Ryder did a awesome job setting the ball up to their teammates. The BCMS girls ended the season 5-4 on the season and 3-3 in district.  Congratulations to all for a great season!
