Oak Forest Elementary School in Vidor collected items for flood victims in Zachary, Louisiana during their first week back at school. Mrs. Erin Taylor, a teacher at the school, approached principal James McDowell, left, about helping out. Mrs. Taylor’s daughter, Brittany McKeown, lives in Zachary and although her immediate family was unharmed, she knows many other family members and friends who had great losses. In spite of the fact that students’ families had just spent money on school supplies and new school clothing, they reached a little deeper, donating household goods, diapers, cleaners, and clothing for the Zachary residents whose losses were so heavy. A loaded truck departed from Oak Forest Elementary on Saturday morning with the donations, and the Oak Forest students learned one of the most valuable lessons of all as they began a new school year: Help Others.
