Little Cypress Junior High will have new faces on Monday as the entire Mauriceville Elementary population will begin classes at Little Cypress Junior High and will return to full day classes since Hurricane Harvey.

This is the first building to complete the remediation process, according to a press release from the school, district.

In a letter to the parents, the school said, “All Mauriceville Elementary students, pre-k through fifth, will attend classes at Little Cypress Junior High. The building is clean and safe, but has not had cosmetic repairs. Hopefully, this will be done during the summer when students are not on campus. The lower sheetrock walls have heavy plastic sheets separating the rooms and covering all wiring and pipes. The classrooms have three cinderblock walls and only one that is made of sheetrock, so the plastic walls are minimal.”

The plastic sheets are flame retardant which also help provide sound proofing between the classrooms.

In the planning of where to put which classes, each room was assessed and utilized for optimum usage. A storage closet becomes a reading intervention room while the gymnasium will not be in use.

“The flooring is not a safe area for the children due to the volley ball goal insets,” Principal Kari Broussard said.

The district has already started the bidding process to have the flooring replaced.

In the choir room, practice rooms become class rooms.

At Mauriceville Middle School, of the 550 students, 258 had flooding in their homes and 22 staff members were affected.

“The rest had others living with them,” Broussard added. “It touched everyone and they are still working.”

The classrooms will not have doors, but that did not stop teachers from finding ways to decorate. Curtains were added in bright colors to bring comfort to the young students.

As teachers worked to make the change over as smooth as possible, the librarian was busy organizing the library and computer lab.

All one more step in the recovery process for the school district.
