Angelle, Seeley voted to league academic teams

(SPECIAL TO THE LEADER) —

(BEAUMONT) – Pitcher Chase Angelle was named to the All-Southland Conference Academic first team and was joined by infielder Reed Seeley- second team- as representatives from the Lamar baseball team, the league announced Wednesday morning.
Angelle was Lamar’s best pitcher for the season on a 2.01 earned run average and team-leading five wins and strikeouts (65). He moved into seventh place on LU’s career ERA list at 2.86 and led the SLC in complete games (5) and was sixth in innings pitched (98.2).
The Orangefield native, who pitched in two shutouts, took over as the team’s series-opening starter three weeks into the conference season.
He was named an automatic selection to the team after he was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII team in early May, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for his performances athletically and in the classroom.
The graduate student earned his master’s in accounting one year after receiving his bachelor’s in the same field; he finished with a 3.82 grade point average.
Angelle is a three-time vote getter for the honor after nabbing second-team votes in 2013 and 2014.
Seeley was Lamar’s leader in walks and second in runs scored. The Baytown native was the Cards’ fifth-leading hitter and third in on-base percentage.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising communications with a 3.50 earned run average, and was a member of the LU’s President’s and Dean’s list.
All 13 league teams had at least one representative. The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each SLC university.
Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
