Jefferson County Master Gardeners prepare for two plant sales

“Just for you, we’re having two” is the mantra for the Jefferson County Master Gardeners as they prepare for two plant sales this spring. The first, a Vegetable and Herbs Sale, is set from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, March 5, at the group’s Test Gardens at Jack Brooks Regional Airport. The second sale, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, is the usual Spring Plant Sale and Market Days event. It will be held from 9 am to 1 pm at Hangar 4 at the airport.

Why two sales?   Joyce Logan, chairperson of the Vegetable and Herb Sale, says it is a convenience for those wishing to get their spring gardens in early. As the last frost day in our region is March 5, you should be able to buy your bedding plants on Saturday and plant them into your prepared beds the next day, she advises. Logan also adds that there will be many varieties of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, as well as many herbs, that are great for our area available.

Stellina Reed, chairperson for the Spring Plant Sale and Market Day, promises an array of blooming annuals and perennials, including Texas Superstars®, EarthKind and Natives, that will enhance any garden. In addition, there will be shrubs, trees, citrus, tropicals, hanging baskets and dish gardens to choose from, as well as a limited supply of veggies and herbs. And don’t forget the offerings of the vendors as well as the Kids Korner, Reed adds.

As usual there is free parking and free admission to these two JCMG sales. You are also encouraged to come early for the best selections and to bring your own wagon or cart for ease in selecting your plants.. However, no pets, only service animals, please.
