BEAUMONT — Spindletop Center is hosting an open house and dedication for its new sensory room designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The event starts at 10 a.m. April 22 at 655 S. 8th Street in Beaumont.

The sensory room is a space with special equipment designed to help an individual with sensory challenges learn strategies to cope with external stimuli.

Sensory rooms can benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy. It can also promote a calming effect, increased focus and improved motor skills.

Danielle Pardue, director of business development and public relations, said Spindletop clients deserve the best support options available.

“It is our goal to keep seeking innovative ways to bring these to them, right here at home in Southeast Texas,” she said.

Spindletop Center is the sole Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic providing services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health and substance use disorders in Orange, Jefferson, Hardin, Jasper and Chambers Counties.

In Fiscal Year 2023, Spindletop Center provided services to 16,225 adults and youth, 1087 of whom were individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The sensory room is located in the renovated Wade Center at the Spindletop North Campus.

The all-new sensory room was funded by the Eva DuJay Foundation, Mary Harold Medical Trust, as well as the City of Beaumont Community Development 2023 Block Grant.

“We are exceptionally grateful for partnerships such as those with the City of Beaumont, Hancock Whitney and many, many more who continue to offer grant funding opportunities for Spindletop Center to further enhance our resources and services for our clients,” Pardue said.
