Police identify Orange resident, 60, killed following auto-pedestrian crash

An Orange man was killed, police said, when he was struck by a truck while standing in the middle of the highway.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at 8:24 p.m. Thursday in Newton County. On Monday, authorities identified the victim as 60-year-old Sherwood Wagner of Orange.

Newton County Dispatch received the call last week of an individual being hit by a vehicle on Highway 62 North of CR 3150.

Deweyville First Responders, the Department of Public Safety, justice of the peach and sheriff’s office responded.

Preliminary investigation discovered Wagner was in the middle of the roadway when he was hit in the northbound lane on Highway 62 (north of County Road 3150) just before the Jasper/Newton County Line.

According to the sheriff’s office, Wagner pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.

Texas Department of Public Safety identified the driver of the impact vehicle, a 2018 Toyota truck, as Mitchell Ames.

Authorities said Ames is a 43-year-old Call resident.

The Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation.
