Schools across the state are making schedule changes on their football schedules since Class 4A-and-under can start practicing and playing in August while 6A-5A schools can’t start practice until September.

Well, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears added blockbuster games against Class 4A state powers.

LC-M saw its game against Katy Jordan postponed due to cancellations as Katy Jordan can’t start practice until September, so that left an open date for Coach Randy Crouch and his Bears.

Crouch was able to secure a game at home Sept. 11 against the Carthage Bulldogs.

Carthage, which dropped from Class 4A Division I to Division II this season, captured the Class 4A Division I state title last season and also won 4A Division I state crowns in 2017, 2016 and 2014.

The Bears also have a non-district game at Houston Kinkaid slated for Sept. 25 and that game is still slated for the time-being.

The Mustangs were scheduled to take on Nederland at home Aug. 28 in their opener but Nederland can’t show up.

WO-S coach Cornel Thompson said Wednesday afternoon that the Mustangs will face the Waco La Vega Pirates Aug. 28 at a neutral site at Madisonville High School.

The Pirates were state runnerups to Carthage last season. The Pirates brought home 4A Division I state crowns in 2018 and 2015.

WO-S went to the 4A Division II state championships from 2014-2017, winning state titles in 2015 and 2016.

The Bridge City Cardinals had a schedule change as well, as they will now take on the Huffman Falcons Sept. 11 at a neutral site at Humble’s Turner Stadium because the turf at Huffman’s Stadium remains a work in progress.
