Softball season cranking up; plus schedules

Another possible super softball season is right around the corner as the Texas high school softball season got cranked up Friday with the first official day of practice.

Last season, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears stormed to the District 22-4A title for long-time coach Dena Adkins, dominating almost every team that stepped in front of them as they went a perfect 12-0.

The Lady Bears were ranked No. 1 for quite awhile in the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association Class 4A state poll and eventually fell to the 2018 4A state champion Liberty Lady Panthers in the bidistrict round of the postseason.

Over in Orangefield, the Lady Bobcats flourished for head coach Rebekah Ragsdale and they definitely enjoyed the fruits of playing in Class 3A this season.

The Lady Bobcats wrapped up a second-place finish in the District 22-3A race and advanced to the third round of the postseason. That included sweeps of Corrigan-Camden and New Waverly before they fell to a powerful Danbury team in the regional quarterfinals.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals lost pitching ace Kassidy Wilbur to graduation last year as she has went on to put up huge numbers for Stephen F. Austin University this season.

It took a bit for the Lady Cardinals to find their groove with a young team but they hit their stride, especially by getting hot in the second half of 22-4A play to stroll into the playoffs as the third seed before falling to a powerful Huffman team that eventually won the 2019 state title in the bidistrict round. Former LC-M standout pitcher Raven Cole will be taking over as the head coach of the Lady Cardinal program this season as they look to make waves in 22-4A.

The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs battled hard for coach Tiffany McFatter and made tremendous strides this season as they will look to get even better next season. The Lady Mustangs certainly have a lot to look forward too with a team that gained a lot of experience last year, plus they get to play on their new turf field.
