Late surge lifts Lady Mustangs past Bridge City

BRIDGE CITY – Closing out the game with a 9-2 spurt, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs nab a big District 22-4A win on the road Friday night by downing Bridge City 41-34 at Cardinal Gym.
The Lady Cardinals (0-1 in district) tied the game up at 32-32 with a rebound and put back by Aspen Daniels. The Lady Mustangs took over from there.
The Lady Mustangs (1-1 in district) promptly went on a 9-0 run to put away the Lady Cardinals.
Aniah Henderson scored five of the nine points in the WO-S spurt, including a huge three-point missile that basically sealed it.
Henderson finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and snagging 10 rebounds.
Both teams lost their top scorers late in the game.
B’Jne’ Arvie, who paced the Lady Mustangs with a game-high 14 points while also yanking down seven rebounds, passed out at the free-throw line with 3:35 remaining. She received prompt attention and watched from the bench the rest of the way as she saw her teammates going on a big push down the stretch.
Aspen Daniels paced the Lady Cardinals with a double-double of her own as she finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 boards before fouling out with 2:06 remaining.
Both teams struggled to find any offensive consistency until the final period of play.
The Lady Mustangs led just 22-20 entering the fourth quarter.
WO-S led 11-10 at halftime while Bridge City held a 7-5 cushion after the first quarter.
Kyndall Harrison, who had six points on two three-pointers for the night, sparked BC with a big three-pointer in the first period to give her team a 7-2 edge. Arvie tallied three straight points to end the period to pull WO-S to within two points.
Henderson scored four points for the Lady Mustangs in the second period and WO-S held BC to just one field goal in the quarter, a Harrison three-pointer.
There were actually more turnovers in the first half between the two squads (25) then there were total points (21).
WO-S led by as much as 19-12 in the third quarter as Arvie bruised her way inside for eight of her points in the period.
The Lady Cardinals closed with a 8-3 streak as Aspen Daniels and Kalen Smith scored two field goals apiece to trim it to two to start the fourth.
The Lady Mustangs finished with a 33-31 rebounding edge.
Marlandria Hebert tallied eight points and grabbed six boards for WO-S while Gabby Tims hauled down six rebounds.
Smith and Austyn Daniels added six points apiece for the Lady Cardinals while Reesie Ryder hauled in six rebounds.
The Lady Cardinals finished with 29 turnovers while WO-S committed 28.
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line. The Lady Mustangs went just 9-of-21 while the Lady Cardinals made 8-of-17.
Both teams will be in tournament action next Thursday through Friday with Bridge City competing in the East Chambers Tournament while WO-S heads to the Hull-Daisetta Tournament.
