LaPoint-Teate nabs All-ASC honor for ETBU

MARSHALL, Texas – Former West Orange-Stark standout Grant LaPoint-Teate recently was named to the Second Team All-American Southwest Conference Team after a superb senior campaign at defensive back for East Texas Baptist University.

LaPoint-Teate finished his season with 28 tackles, including six vs. Texas Lutheran (9/21/19). He had a three-interception game, which earned him ASC Defensive Player of the Week honors against McM (10/19/19).

Completing their fifth straight winning season, the East Texas Baptist University football team received several awards from the American Southwest Conference. ETBU had 12 players earn award with three players gain All-ASC first team.

Brian Baca (offensive), Sirbatian Charles (defensive) and Anton Clark (defensive) all earned first-team honors. Baca (Pittsburg, Texas) ended his ETBU career completing 191-of-315 passing for 2296 yards and 16 touchdown passes. He leaves ETBU as the all-time passing touchdown leader with 64 while becoming the second quarterback in program history to complete over 500 passes (501) and throw for over 7,000 yards (7,192) for his career. He was also a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy. This is the second straight year he has was All-ASC first-team.

Charles (Patterson, La.) finished with 35 tackles with a season-high six tackles vs. McMurry (10/19/19) and Howard Payne (10/26/19). As a defensive back, Charles intercepted a pass vs. Hardin-Simmons (11/9/19) and broke up 15 passes including four vs. Belhaven (10/5/19).

Clark (Mansfield, Texas) led ETBU’s defense with 70 tackles, including 15 against Belhaven (10/5/19). This would feature 13 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also forced three fumbles and intercepted two passes while earning an ASC Defensive Player of the Week award.

The second team featured two offensive players in Jalen Blanton and Jeremiah Robertson and two defensive players in KJ Kelley and LaPoint-Teate.

Blanton (Rosser, Texas) led ETBU’s receiving core with 41 receptions for 557 yards while catching five touchdown passes. This included two touchdown catches at Wisconsin-Platteville and a 122-yard game vs. BU (10/5/19).

Robertson (Huntington, Texas) earns his second straight second team honor as he finished as ETBU’s leading rusher with 817 yards on 153 carries and 12 rushing touchdowns. This season saw him have five games of 100 or more yards and he also rushed for three touchdowns at Sul Ross State (9/28/19). He would post a season-high 169 yards rushing as he earned ASC Offensive Player of the Week honor.

Kelley (Abilene, Texas) notched 57 tackles including a season-high 17 vs. HSU (11/9/19). His defining performance came at SU (11/2/19) when he intercepted three passes finishing with four on the season. He also would be named ASC Defensive Player of the Week and to the d3football.com “Team of the Week.”

ETBU finished the season 6-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference coming in fourth place.
