It’s that time of the year when high school players take to the basketball court for real.

The Texas high school girls will take to the courts this coming week to crank up their season while the boys will start the following week.

Three of out four local teams punched their way to the playoffs last season and will look to do the same this season.

Coach Jennifer Willis saw her Orangefield Lady Bobcats drop down a classification to the 3A ranks and Orangefield prospered mightily.

The Lady Bobcats stormed to a 29-7 record and dominated District 22-3A action, going a perfect 14-0. They smashed Hemphill in the bidistrict playoffs and advanced to the area round.

Two first-year head coaches worked hard to get their two squads involved in postseason play as Eddie Michalko led the LC-M Lady Bears to the playoffs as did Lance Robertson at Bridge City.

The Lady Bears had their best record in years, ringing up a 22-11 mark and finishing third in a highly competitive District 22-4A race.

Robertson helped guide the Bridge City Lady Cardinals to a 22-14 mark, including a big last game regular season win against Lumberton that sealed the fourth-place playoff berth.

Over at West Orange-Stark this season, first-year head coach David Wilson will look to get the Lady Mustangs into the playoff mix.

Several key standouts are back across the area. They include last year’s Orange Leader Team MVP Faith Fregia from Orangefield and The Leader Offensive MVP in Chelsea Perry.

In season openers for teams, Orangefield will host Kelly and WO-S will visit Vidor Nov. 8. Bridge City visits Kountze Nov. 9 and LC-M heads to East Chambers Nov. 12.
