BRIDGE CITY – After both missed their non-district games last week due to Tropical Storm Imelda, the Bridge City Cardinals and West Orange-Stark Mustangs will get together in non-district play at Ward Stadium Friday night.

The Cardinals (1-2) were suppose to play Silsbee last week while the Mustangs (2-1) were going to host Crosby.

Bridge City glided past the Anahuac Panthers 35-21 in their last game to nail down their first win of the season.

The Cardinals showed plenty of determination against Anahuac, tallying the game’s last 14 points after the Panthers had rallied to tie the game up at 21-21.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Oceguera torched the Anahuac defense as he dashed around for 150 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Cardinal senior fullback Andy Lara had a huge game as well behind a hard-blocking Cardinal front wall as he zipped to 137 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals, who dropped their first two games to Diboll (27-7) and to Jasper (65-14), played excellent on defense against Anahuac, limiting the Panthers to just 256 total yards.

After battling Class 3A Division II state-ranked No. 1 Newton down to the wire in a tough 20-14 road loss in their last outing, the Mustangs will look to try and bounce back on the road this week/.

The Mustangs actually outgained the Eagles 252-246 in the loss but costly turnovers and a big trick play by the Eagles hampered the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will check in averaging 333 yards a game, 215.3 on the ground and 117.7 in the air.

WO-S quarterback Jerren Terrell has completed 31-of-51 passes for 353 yards and two TDs.

Mustang tailback Elijah Gales has darted for 425 yards and six TDs on 55 carries.

Jayson Ziegler leads the Mustangs with six receptions while Artavious Samuel has five catches for 107 yards and Jadon Jones snagged a 68-yard TD pass from Terrell in the Newton game.

The Mustang defense is allowing just 231 yards a game, 138.3 on the ground and 92.7 in the air.

WO-S downed Bridge City 21-0 at West Orange last season. The Mustangs gained 314 total yards, 237 on the ground and the Mustang defense was stingy, holding the Cardinals to just 39 total yards.

The Cardinals will have their bye week next week and will visit LC-M Oct. 11 in their District 11-4A Division I opener while the Mustangs return home to host Jasper in their last non-district tilt.
