WOCCISD Education Foundation President Krispen Walker said, “On August 20, 2019, the WOCCISD Education Foundation was honored to present 10 grant awards totaling just over $24,000 to the worthy educators in our district.  This year, our eighth time to present awards, we were able to fund every grant request that was submitted.  Since 2011, the WOCCISD Education Foundation has awarded approximately $152,000 to educators across the district.  We are grateful to Chevron Phillips for their donation of $5000, which will be used to fund STEM-related grants.   

The grant awards included eight individual classroom grants and two campus grants. Areas funded included not only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields, but also Reading, History, Writing, Social Skills and more. 

This is the second consecutive year for Chevron to participate.

WOCCISD teachers and campus grants are as follows:

Heather Anderson WOS Elementary	$1,000	Aquariums  and aquatic learning for all Kindergarten Classrooms	This grant will fund a 12-15 gallon classroom aquarium in each kindergarten classroom to encourage discovery and sea exploration; will also promote responsibility in the care of aquatic classroom residents.
WOS Elementary Grant submitted by Dr. Troy Bethley, Benny Smith, Jenny Morgan, Yunekia Pollard	$14,000	Outdoor Multi-sensory Classroom to integrate learning across the curriculum	The outdoor classroom will provide environmental awareness. Students will learn community service through maintaining life sustenance. In addition to understanding, they will learn the benefits of alternative energy resources provided by wind, water, and sun. Additionally, the garden will provide all students an extension to the traditional daily classroom to incorporate journaling, writing, measuring, constructing, mapping, and observing.
Ashton Peddy WOS Elementary	$1,000	Kindergarten Engineering Tools; all K classrooms	The grant will provide magnetic tiles, building sticks, and design/drill kits for math and science classes.
Christina Anderson Academic Alternative Center	$999	Building Resiliency through a Positive Character Approach	The grant will provide for a  program to build positive behavior skills, as well as supporting materials that include a character education library
Melissa Bruno WOS Elementary	$1,000	Builders and marbles for all Kindergarten classrooms	The grant will fund experiential learning which will include marbles, components for marble railways, magnets, and gears, axels and joints that snap, click, and pop together to examine math and engineering concepts.
Joy Courtier North Early Learning Center	$732	A Journey in Time, All NELC students	The grant will fund a prehistoric (dinosaur) classroom experience in which students will have the opportunity to learn with all five senses while also learning math, reading, science, social studies, and technology.
Katrina Petitt WOS Elementary	$918	Robotics Kits for all Kindergarten classrooms	The grant provides for the purchase of robotics kits, in addition to links and gears kits, and waffle blocks.
Amanda Reynolds North Early Learning Center	$2,500	Community Helpers, All students at North ELC	This grant provides decorations and visuals to support a Community Helpers classroom at North Early Learning Center.
Lou Ann Benson WOS Elementary	$1,000	Botany and Weather tools for all Kindergarten classes	This grant will purchase large botany planters for the kindergarten classrooms, climate and weather change kits, sets of magnifying glasses and safety goggles, engineering flakes, and storage containers
Jerrica Washburn WOS Elementary	$882	Kindergarten STEM centers (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), all kindergarten classes	This grant will provide Lego building bricks and Fairy Tale problem Stem Kits for all kindergarten classrooms.

Since the WOCCISD Education Foundation began awarding grants in 2011, more than 60 grants have been awarded.

The WOCCISD Education Foundation is a not for profit 501(c) 3 created in 2009.  

Dr. Lois Bready, and her brother Doug Bready established the WOCCISD Education Foundation in memory of their parents Eva and Gerald Bready.  Eva Bready was a beloved and innovative teacher in the WOCCISD School District who prepared a generation of students to excel in science and to make significant contributions to their communities.  Both Eva and Gerald Bready were passionate supporters of the importance of science and math education.
