UPDATE: Multiple vehicle crash shuts down Interstate 10 in Jefferson County

FINAL UPDATE:  At approximately 3:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County.  The crash occurred approximately three (3) miles East of the Jefferson-Chambers County line.

The preliminary DPS crash investigation indicates that a 2011 KIA SUV was traveling westbound on Interstate 10.  The vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed for the wet road conditions and lost control.  The vehicle struck a concrete wall and spun into a truck tractor semi-trailer and another vehicle.  There were seven (7) additional vehicles involved in the chain-reaction crash.
The driver of the KIA, 33-year-old Laranda Pippin of Lumberton, was transported by ambulance to Riceland hospital in Winnie with minor injuries.
The passenger in the KIA, a minor child, was transported by ambulance to Texas Children’s hospital in Houston for observation only.
The only other injured driver was 64-year-old Elsie Gates of Nacogdoches who was transported to Riceland hospital with minor injuries.  Gates was driving a Toyota Camry.
All westbound traffic lanes of Interstate 10 were closed for approximately two hours, but have since reopened to traffic.
There are no additional details to be released.

PRESS RELEASE — At approximately 3 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County.  The crash is approximately three miles East of the Jefferson-Chambers County line.

Initial reports indicate that there are at least six vehicles involved in the crash; however, there have been no confirmed reports of serious injuries.  DPS Troopers and other emergency personnel are in route to the crash scene.

At this time, all westbound traffic lanes of Interstate 10, near mile marker 832, in Jefferson County are closed due to a multiple vehicle crash.  Motorists traveling from the Beaumont area are urged to use US 90 or SH 124 as an alternate travel route.  Expect delays.
