Organizations team up to donate 15,000 pounds of food to the Southeast Texas Food Bank

BEAUMONT, Texas For the third year in a row, Walmart, Bimbo Bakeries USA and Tyson Foods have joined forces to help end hunger across the United States. 

On Wednesday, the three companies donated 15,000 pounds of food – equating to 13,750 meals – to the Southeast Texas Food Bank through a partnership with Feeding America.

Representatives from each of the organizations visited the Southeast Texas Food Bank today to deliver the food and tour the facility. As part of this partnership, Walmart, Bimbo Bakeries USA and Tyson Foods donated 5,000 pounds of bread and 10,000 pounds of chicken that will be given to individuals and families over the coming weeks.

This donation – equating to 13,750 meals – will help those who struggle with hunger in the Jefferson, Orange, Hardin, Jasper, Newton, Polk, Sabine and Tyler Counties.

“We cannot begin to describe the impact this donation will have for those who struggle with hunger in southeast Texas,” said Daniel Maher, Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Food Bank. “Each year, we see more and more citizens, just like you and me, who need extra help to make ends meet. Donations like this help us on our mission to ensure no one goes hungry.”

The Southeast Texas Food Bank works to fight hunger in Jefferson, Orange, Hardin, Jasper, Newton, Polk, Sabine and Tyler Counties. It partners with approximately 130 nonprofit agencies within these counties to provide meals for about 12,000 households each month.

Through its partnerships and individual donations, Feeding America – the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States – provides food to millions of Americans through a network of 200 member food banks and 60,000 partner agencies.

The Southeast Texas Food Bank has served Southeast Texans since 1991.  It is projecting it will distribute approximately 7.5 million meals this year within its eight-county service territory, which would represent an all-time high output in the Food Bank’s history.  The Food Bank’s core mission is to reduce hunger for the 21 percent of the residents in those eight counties deemed to be food insecure (lacking adequate access to the proper nutrition which could insure them an active and healthy lifestyle), but it complements this mission with a host of programs, including seniors and children’s services, school supply distribution, nutrition education, and social services enrollment.  Approximately 100,000 residents of the Food Bank’s service territory benefit from the services of the Southeast Texas Food Bank and its partner agencies each year.
