Crash on State Hwy. 87 injures 4 people

At approximately 1:00 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a multiple vehicle crash, at approximately 1 a.m. Friday, at the intersection of State Hwy. 87 and Austin Street in the city of Port Arthur.  The crash injured four people and involved a Port Arthur Police Officer.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates that a Port Arthur Police Department’s patrol unit was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of State Hwy. 87 and Austin Street.  The patrol unit was stopped at a red traffic light on State Hwy. 87 when the vehicle was rear-ended by a 1997 Pontiac passenger vehicle.

The officer is identified as 35-year-old Daniel Summers of Port Arthur.

Summers was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac, Devon Andre Martin, 31, of Houston, and his two passengers were transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.  The two passengers are children, ages 10 and 11.

This is an ongoing investigation as Troopers investigate all factors that may have contributed to this crash, including alcohol and speed.
