Several Orange County tracksters will look to bring home some medals from the University Interscholastic League State Track & Field Championships that will be held Friday and Saturday at the University of Texas in Austin.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Eli Peveto, will look to wrap up a great run as a Bear as he will compete in both the 3,200 meters and the 1,600 meters in Class 4A. Peveto was the 4A Region III champion in both events.

Peveto will run the 3,200 meters Saturday at 9 a.m. and will tackle the 1,600 meters at 9:35 p.m. Saturday night.

Peveto had the fourth best regional time in the 3,200 among the nine state qualifiers. Peveto ran a 9:47.60 to win at regionals.

Meilssa’s Judson Greer should be Peveto’s top challenge over the course of both his races. Greer turned in a 9:26.03 to win his regional. Celina’s Gavin Frick ran a 9:40.94 at his regional while Melissa’s Lucas Tauch ran a 9:42.64. Peveto’s best time of the season though, was a sizzling 9:15.75.

In the 1,600 meters, Peveto ranks second behind Melissa’s Greer. Peveto ran a 4:26.90 at regionals while Greer clocked in at 4:24.18 at his regional.

Bridge City freshman Caryss Carpenter will look to be in the hunt in the girls Class 4A high jump.

Carpenter jumped 5-5 at regionals to earn second-place. Only three inches separates the nine competitors in Austin. Carpenter is tied with the best regional jump with Huntington’s Torie Comeaux and Texarkana Liberty-Eylau’s Keely Norris. Carpenter will jump around 10 a.m. Saturday.

In Class 3A, Orangefield freshman Katelynn Helm will battle it out in the 800 meters. Helm ran a superb 2:17.57 to set a new 3A Region III record. She ranks fifth out of the nine competitors in Austin but less than two seconds separate the top five. Marissa Agee of Howe has the top regional time going in after running a 2:15.93.

Helm will run at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Orangefield’s 1,600-meter relay team consisting of Helm, Lily Saucedo, Victoria Welch and Jaslyn Newman will compete at 10:25 p.m. Friday. They ran a 4:08.69 at regionals to nab second-place.
