Sorge, Lady Cats stifle New Waverly

JASPER – Getting a complete-game shutout from ace Codie Sorge and some timely hitting, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats blanked the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs 6-0 in the Class 3A Region III area round of the playoffs Thursday night at Jasper High School.

Sorge worked her magic for the Lady Bobcats (23-8) as she scattered five hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bobcats had 10 hits off New Waverly (20-9) pitching.

Ragan Stone tossed the first five innings for the Lady Bulldogs and she allowed eight hits while fanning one and walking three. Taylor Bennett pitched the sixth frame and allowed two hits.

The Lady Bobcats will now move on to the 3A Region III quarterfinals next week and will face either Danbury or Pollok Central.

The Lady Bobcats scratched in a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Olivia Grant drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a Alyssa Dodd sacrifice bunt. Tiffany Ciancaglione then reached on an infield hit. Sorge got on after a Lady Bulldog error as Grant scored. Heather Mineer then brought in Ciancaglione with a RBI single.

Orangefield tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hannah Dupuis drew a leadoff walk   Dodd followed with a bunt single. Ryden Stanfield loaded the bases with a single to left centerfield.

Grant reached on a fielder’s choice as Dupuis scored on an error on a play at the plate.

Emma Humplik made it 4-0 with a RBI groundout that plated Alayna Dodd. Alyssa Dodd then drove in Stanfield with a sacrifice fly to leftfield.

The Lady Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Stanfield ripped a leadoff single to right and swiped second base. Humplik eventually drove Stanfield home with a RBI single to left.

The Lady Bulldogs’ biggest threat all night came in the top of the third inning.

Cecilia Vasquez roped a one-out double to left and the Lady Bobcats elected to intentionally walk New Waverly power hitter Jayla Gaines. With two outs, Kassi Peterson slapped a single to center to load the bases. Sorge worked her way out of it though, striking out Angela Roberts.

The Lady Bobcats left two stranded in the bottom of the second inning after Dupuis and Alayna Dodd had back-to-back two-out singles.

Humplik had a single for the Lady Bobcats in the first inning and Mineer had a single in the fifth inning.
