LUMBERTON — District 22-4A track teams definitely battled the elements in the running finals on a rainy day at the District 22-4A Track & Field Championships at Lumberton High School Thursday but it did not slow down the Bridge City Lady Cardinals from “storming” to the district team title.

The Lady Cardinals amassed a stunning 241 points to dominate the seven-team field. The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs were a distant second with 103 points.

The top four individuals in each event qualified for the Area Meet, which will be at Huffman High School in a couple weeks.

The Lady Cardinals put together an excellent team performance throughout the field events and running finals. They racked up a total of eight first-place finishes, nine second-place finishes and nine third-place finishes to pile up a slew of points.

On the boys side, Silsbee won the team crown with 146 points. LC-M was second with 111 points while WO-S snagged third with 102 points.

The WO-S Lady Mustangs had a nice outing on the track Thursday. Diamond Judge won the 100 meters (12.87) and Kianna Barnes captured the 400 meters (1:03.16). The Lady Mustangs also brought it in the 400-meter relay (50.99) and the 1,600-meter relay (4:16.01) to snag gold in both.

Bridge City’s Kaylen Smith won the 800 meters (2:39.24) while teammate Mikenna Brown took the 1,600 meters (5:59.47).

On the boys side, LC-M senior distance standout Eli Peveto nailed down two gold medals as he won the 800 meters in 2:05.11 in a tight race and then he dominated the 1,600 meters by running a 4:42.60. He won the 3,200 meters on Tuesday.

Bridge City’s George Fleming won the 100 meters (11.29) while WO-S captured a first in the 400-meter relay (44.08).
