Hawks fly past cold Bears

LITTLE CYPRESS — Going on a 17-2 spurt to open the game, the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks made quick work of the ice cold Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 64-25 in District 22-4A action at the Hargrove Bear Cave Tuesday night.

The Bears (11-8, 2-5) got off to a rocky start and stayed cold throughout the night as the Hawks (22-8, 6-1), who are in second-place behind defending state champion Silsbee, took full advantage of it.

The Hawks led 13-2 at the end of the first quarter as they forced LC-M into eight of its 20 turnovers and increased it to 23-8 by intermission.

Jesse Doucette scored six of his team-high 11 points for the Bears in the second quarter, including two three-point bombs.

However, the Hawks sealed the deal with a 29-8 spurt in the third quarter to go up 52-16 entering the fourth.

Slick Hawk guard Bruce Green scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the third period as the Hawks pulled away.

Hardin-Jefferson saw all 10 of its players on the roster score.

Demetrius Johnson, Jaystan Davis and Austin Samaha each scored eight points. Hawk post Michael McIntosh had six points and five boards while Jason Persohn had four points and yanked down nine rebounds.

The Hawks limited LC-M’s leading scorer Braden Bridges to six points as he scored five of them in the fourth quarter.

Ethan McCollum, who scored LC-M’s only two points in the first quarter, finished with four points and a team-high eight rebounds while Doucette and Jackson Smith grabbed four boards apiece,

‘The Hawks, who had just seven turnovers on the night, outrebounded the Bears 32-24.

The Hawks were 9-of-13 from the free-throw line while the Bears went just 6-of-12.

The Bears will have a bye this Friday before hitting the road Tuesday with a trip to Lumberton.
