WEST ORANGE — For the first time in eight years, West Orange is increasing sanitation rates by $2 a month.

Pineywood Sanitation will continue collections in West Orange.

“They agreed to a 3-percent increase instead of a 9.6-percent,” Mike Stelly said. “Our last rate increase was in 2010 for $2 a month. It carried us for eight years and I would like to see it happen again.”

Another change some residents will see on the bill is the $2.50 cart replacement fee has been done away with.

“The fee rolled out to some,” Stelly said. “Now it is gone.”

Pinewood will also take over the dumpster service the city supplied to residents.

“It will continue just like now,” Stelly said. “We won’t supply the truck or the manpower now.”

The city charged $30 to supply a dumpster to a resident and then collect it later. Pineywood will take over the service at the same rate plus tax and an R&R fee.

Stelly added the change would be added to the contract between the city and the sanitation company.

“I see this as a good move,” Mayor Roy McDonald said.
