Fuel Spill on Highway 62 in Orange County

FINAL UPDATE: At approximately 2:30p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a report of a fuel spill on SH 62, near Tulane, in Orange County.

Initial reports indicate that a 2008 Volkswagen passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on SH 62.  The vehicle experienced a mechanical malfunction which caused the driver to veer off the roadway.  After leaving the road, the vehicle struck a natural gas pipeline which caused the pipeline to rupture.

The driver, 36-year-old Yuniel Carbonell-Cleger of Port Arthur, was not injured.

The passenger, 35-year-old Jaydar Medina also of Port Arthur, was transported to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas with minor injuries.

Crews from Center Point Energy were on scene to secure the pipeline.

PRESS RELEASE — At approximately 3 p.m. on Friday,  all traffic lanes of State Highway 62 in Orange County are closed due to a fuel spill following a crash.

Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling in the area.
