Orange Leader Sports Editor Van Wade printed two copies of bowl game matchups in mid-December.  He handed me one and he kept one.

“Just circle the winners for each game,” said Van.

There were at least 30 games.  Which means there were 60 schools listed on the page.  I did not know anything about more than half the schools.

“I will keep a tally of correct and incorrect predictions and we will see who comes out on top,” said Van.

Great, the pro wants to put me in my place.

Wade picked Georgia to beat Texas.  An interesting choice I thought since he bleeds burnt orange.  I picked Texas to beat Georgia. It was the deciding pick. We were neck and neck to that point and in agreement beyond.

I beat the pro! It was a glorious moment.  (It was obviously a fluke).

We did not share our picks until it we were done.  We laughed out loud when we read each other’s pick for the National Championship.

Clemson Tigers.

According to my neighbor, Beverly, we voted against Alabama rather than for Clemson.  I believe she is right.

We laughed out loud when the Tigers prevailed.

 

She builds bridges when she is not employing her skills as a wordsmith

 

Orange Leader Editor Dawn Burleigh is a superstar.  

She will be recognized Saturday night, January 19, 2019, at the Blossoming Minds MLK Gala 2019.   It will be held at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center.

Dawn will be recognized for her work building bridges in the community.

It is an honor she truly deserves.  

Dawn seeks out people in the community as she networks in the area looking for folks willing to write about their interests and about their community.  

She seeks to create a ‘safe zone’ for others to join the conversation in print.  She coaches and encourages those with thoughts and ideas worth writing but not sure they can.

Her ‘students’ have come from a wide spectrum across our community.

Congratulations Dawn, we are grateful for all you do.
