WEST ORANGE – The basket had a “lid” on it throughout most of the night but the Bridge City Lady Cardinals made just enough shots to snag their District 22-4A basketball opener with a 30-10 win over the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs Friday night at Mustang Gym.

Both teams struggled on the offensive end, a lot of it due to some stout defensive play.

The Lady Mustangs, who fell to 0-2 in district play, were held scoreless by the Lady Cardinals in the first quarter as Bridge City led 5-0 at the end of the period after Rylee Oceguera scored four points.

The Lady Cardinals increased their cushion to 11-5 by intermission by outscoring WO-S 6-5 in the second quarter.

Bridge City was able to pull away with a 10-2 run in the third period, sparked by Madison Fischer’s five points in the quarter and a three-point bomb by Oceguera.

Guard Diamaond Judge had the Lady Mustangs’ lone field goal in the third quarter as they trailed 21-7 at the end of the period.

The Lady Cardinals closed out the game with a 9-3 run behind six points by Aniah Hicks.

Hicks led the Lady Cardinals with eight points. Fischer had seven points and a game-high 16 rebounds as she hauled in 11 of her boards in the first half. Oceguera had seven points and four rebounds and Hannah Wiegreffe contributed seven rebounds for the Lady Cardinals, who outrebounded WO-S 37-31.

Judge, Roynisha Wade, Ke’shunia Winbush and Aniah Henderson all scored two points for the Lady Mustangs.

Gabby Tims had seven rebounds while Alissa Brown and Marlandria Hebert added six boards apiece.

The Lady Mustangs finished with 28 turnovers while the Lady Cardinals committed 23. Bridge City was 4-of-8 from the free-throw line while WO-S was just 2-of-6.

The Lady Cardinals will host Hamshire-Fannett Tuesday while WO-S has their bye. The Lady Mustangs will visit Silsbee next Friday.
