Hot middle quarters propel Mustangs past Bobcats in Tennison Tourney

ORANGEFIELD – Outscoring Orangefield 40-27 in the middle two quarters, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs downed the host Bobcats 54-46 in a game at the Orangefield Tennison Tournament Thursday morning.

The Mustangs (6-2) outscored the Bobcats (7-3) 24-17 in the second quarter and 16-10 in the third.

Mustang post Terron Brown paced the WO-S attack with a game-high 23 points. He muscled his way inside for 13 of his points in the second quarter and tallied 10 more points in the second half.

Forward Donanerius Brown contributed 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Mustang cause. Labarius Spraggins was the third Mustang in double figures with 11 points.

Junior post Valentin Catt finished with a nice double-double, scoring 16 points while snagging 12 rebounds before leaving in the fourth quarter due to a major leg cramp. Heston Puckett had eight points and two three-pointers for the Bobcats while Kaiden DuBose had seven points and Tyrone Waggoner had a team-high seven rebounds.

Both teams were cold in the early going as the Bobcats led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mustangs found the hot hand in the second quarter as Brown converted several layups off the fast break and hit a big three-pointer while Spragging scored five points in the period.

Puckett scored five points and Catt and Logan Risinger scored four apiece for the Bobcats in the quarter as they trailed 30-24 at intermission.

The Mustangs stretched the lead to 46-34 by the end of the third quarter as Donanerius Brown strolled around for eight big points while Terron Brown and Spraggins added four apiece.

Catt tallied eight of his points for the Bobcats in the period and scored four more quick points in the fourth to help the Bobcats, who outscored the Mustangs 12-8 in the fourth, crawl back in it.

The Bobcats finished with a 29-27 rebounding edge. Both teams committed 24 turnovers.

The Bobcats were 4-of-7 from the free-throw line while WO-S was 2-for-4.
