NEW CANEY – Well, the Class 4A Region III Division II bidistrict playoff football game between the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and Huntington Red Devils was pretty much over after the opening kickoff.

The Mustangs (7-4), District 10-4A Division II champs, totally bulldozed the woeful Red Devils (3-8), the fourth-place unit out of 9-4A 76-3 at Texan Drive Stadium Thursday night.

The Mustangs now move on to face either Sweeny or La Grange in the area round next week.

The Mustangs zipped out to a 48-0 lead at the half as they outgained the heavily over-matched Red Devils 359-64 in the first 24 minutes.

Even though they had a running clock in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finished with 601 total yards while the Red Devils had 125.

WO-S had 498 yards on the ground on just 29 rushes.

Mustang freshman Elijah Gales scored on half of his touches as he zipped freely through the Huntington defense for 211 yards and four touchdowns on just eight carries.

Red Devil quarterback Tyler Harris completed 3-of-13 passes for 81 yards with Carson Hopper grabbing two of them for 55 yards.

The Mustangs rushed the ball for 306 yards in the half on just 20 carries, averaging more than 15 yards a tote.

Gales had 97 yards on five carries in the half. Kavyn Cooper zipped for 88 yards on six totes and Justin Sibley had 45 yards on two carries as those three teamed up for four touchdowns in the half.

The Mustangs’ blistering of the Red Devils started early as senior return man Renaldo Rose darted and dashed through the Huntington special teams unit for a game-opening 88-yard touchdown return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff to make it 7-0 with 11:45 in the first quarter.

The first time the Mustang offense had the ball, they marched 90 yards on 11 plays to hit paydirt as freshman back Elijah Gales bolted up the middle virtually unscathed for a 20-yard touchdown jaunt to push it to 14-0 with 5:03 in the first quarter. Kavyn Cooper had three carries for 31 yards on the series while Wilson completed a pair of passes that went for 24 yards.

Mustang defensive tackle Quincy Ledet picked off a Harris pass along the line of scrimmage and returned it seven yards to the Red Devil 42 with 2:48 in the first quarter.

Two plays later, Justin Sibley took a jet sweep to the left and sprinted untouched into the end zone from 40 yards out, making it 21-0 with 1:55 in quarter.

The Mustangs put together a quick three-play, 59-yard drive early in the second quarter to go up 28-0.

Cooper got it going with a 53-yard sprint up the middle, in which he cut down the sideline all the way to the Red Devil 2. On the next play Cooper found the end zone on a two-yard plunge with 11:40 in the half.

Using a short field on their next series, the Mustangs drove 24 yards in four plays with backup quarterback Jerren Terrell capping it by bolting off left tackle for a nine-yard touchdown keeper to make it 34-0 with 8:15 at the half. Receiver Jay’zn Robinson had a 16-yard end around that set things up at the nine.

Gales had a superb 64-yard touchdown run along the right side, side-swiping some late Red Devil tackling attempts to hand the Mustangs a 41-0 cushion with 6:30 in the half.

The Mustangs punched it in again late in the half with a nine-play, 69-yard scoring drive capped off by a Ja’Marcus Ross 16-yard dart right through the heart of the Red Devil defense to make it 48-0 with 0:57 in the half.

Ross found the end zone for the second time with 7:30 left in the third quarter when he topped off a three-play, 42-yard drive with a 32-yard breakaway run right up the middle to push it to 55-0. Ross had 53 yards on three carries.

The Red Devils finally countered with a six-play, 55-yard drive after Harris teamed up with Carson Hopper on two pass plays that netted 55 yards. However, the Red Devils had to settle for three as kicker Perrin Teer drilled a 28-yard field goal with 4:34 in the third.

The Mustangs answered quickly. Gale broke loose up the middle for a 54-yard gain and two plays later Terrell found Chavon Crawford on a eight-yard scoring strike to make it 62-3 with 3:01 in the third.

Gales put the finishing touches on a five-play, 39 yard drive with a five-yard touchdown off right tackle to make it 69-3 with 10:38 remaining.

Gales capped his night with a late 55-yard sprint to paydirt.
