Lady Bobcats hold back 6A West Brook, 61-54

ORANGEFIELD – Getting off to a hot start, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats were able to fend out the Beaumont West Brook Lady Bruins 61-54 in non-district action at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night.

The Lady Bobcats (7-2) utilized their outside shooting prowess to help turn back the Lady Bruins.

The Lady Bobcats darted out to a 20-10 cushion in the first quarter and led by as much as 40-26, only to see the Lady Bruins go on a big run to get as close as 46-45 with 4:19 remaining.

Lady Bobcat junior shooting sensation Faith Fregia helped the Lady Bobcats pull away with back-to-back three-point daggers with less than three minutes remaining to help seal it.

The Lady Bobcats canned 11 three-pointers on the night, with Fregia burying five of them, while West Brook connected on just one.

Fregia finished with a game-high 19 points.

Orangefield was stout on the defensive end, forcing the Lady Bruins into 32 turnovers, 21 coming in the first half as the Lady Bobcats went into intermission with a 34-25 cushion. Orangefield guards Jacey Bourque and Emmi Lummus were responsible for creating a ton of West Brook turnovers with their pressure throughout the night.

Bourque also had 15 points and buried three three-point bombs while Lummus had six points and four rebounds.

Post Tatum Garlington got the Lady Bobcats going early as she scored six of her eight points in the first period.

Lady Bruin post Nyrah Hutchings had 12 of her team-high 16 points in the first half, scoring six each in the first two quarters. However, she was held scoreless in the fourth period.

The Lady Bobcats built a 40-26 lead in the third but the Lady Bruins closed with a 14-6 spurt to trail 46-40 heading to the last eight minutes.

Lady Bruin guard India Lockett, who had 10 points and five rebounds, trimmed the lead to 46-45 with a nice drive at the 4:19 mark.

However, the Lady Bobcats got their struggling offense going, getting the two big treys from Fregia along with a big-three pointer by Kylie Elkins, who had eight points.

West Brook finished with a 27-25 rebounding edge. Aubry Downs had a game-high six boards for the Lady Bruins.

Garlington, Fregia, Lummus, Joli Ponfick and Natalie Smith all had four rebounds for the Lady Bobcats.

Breanna Hernandez and Terani Gloss scored eight points apiece for West Brook.

The Lady Bobcats finished with 22 turnovers. Orangefield was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line while West Brook was 11-of-20.

The Lady Bobcats wrapped up the Lumberton Tournament in third-place over the weekend.

They fell to Tomball 36-30. Jacey Bourque led the way with 18 points and four steals. Jolie Ponfick had seven points and three rebounds while Jayme Deutsch added four steals and four rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats downed Lumberton 65-60. Faith Fregia, who was All-Tournament, had 24 points and five steals. Ponfick had seven points and three boards. Bourque contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Tatum Garlington added 11 points and three boards.

Orangefield also defeated Vidor 49-44.

Fregia pumped in 24 points and swiped four steals. Bourque had eight points and four boards while Kylie Elkins had nine points and three rebounds.
