Dr. Howard Williams, a local historian, established six monuments depicting the history of the Navy Base, Levingston and Weaver shipbuilding, riverside WWII housing, the USS Aulick. These monuments are located on the east side of Simmons’s drive close to Green Avenue. The Leaf and Petal established two garden plots in front of the markers. Susan Childers, a member of the club, submitted a request to Texas State Garden Clubs for a $400 grant to rejuvenate these plots. Cottage Cuttings nursery provided new mulch, dirt, and plants plus labor to enhance the beauty of this spot. It’s a peaceful place to read about some history of Orange.
