Boys hoop season cranks up next week, here are schedules

Published 6:07 am Thursday, November 8, 2018

There will be plenty of young faces and also new faces along the benches this year as the 2018-19 boys basketball season cranks up next week.

Three local teams made the playoffs last year as Little Cypress-Mauriceville earned second, West Orange-Stark third and Orangefield fourth in the old district.

Thinks have changed though as Orangefield has dropped down to the Class 3A ranks while Hardin-Jefferson and Lumberton have joined LC-M, WO-S, Bridge City, Silsbee and Hamshire-Fannett in a new District 22-4A.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats will compete in 22-3A against the likes of Anahuac, Buna, Hardin, Kirbyville, Kountze, Warren and East Chambers.

All four of our local teams will be young for sure as there was such a big senior class across the board a season ago.

There will be a pair of new coaches too as Bill Barstow will take over the WO-S program while Randall Robertson will guide the Bridge City Cardinals.

Robertson’s Cardinals will play the first game locally Friday when they host Legacy Christian at 6 p.m. The Cardinals will be at home again Tuesday when they host Vidor at 7:30 p.m.

Orangefield, led by head coach Jake McDonald, will visit Vidor Saturday with a 11:15 a.m. varsity start. The Bobcats will host Bob Hope Academy Monday at 7 p.m.

The LC-M Bears, led by coach Brad Jeffcoat, will visit Port Neches-Groves Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and will visit Vidor Nov. 16. The Bears’ home opener is Nov. 19 against Nederland.

Coach Barstow and the Mustangs open their campaign Nov. 16 on the road at Kountze.

Teams are involved in several tournaments. Orange County will be the host of two of them as Orangefield will host the Bobcat Tournament Dec. 6-8 and Bridge City will have the Cardinal Classic Dec. 28-29.
