Peveto snares 4th, Helm 5th at State CC Meet

ROUND ROCK – Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Eli Peveto wrapped a great run as a Bear in Cross Country by claiming fourth-place in the Class 4A State Cross Country Championships held at Old Settlers Park Saturday afternoon.

Peveto, the District 22-4A champion and 4A Region III champion, turned in a time of 15:43.87 on the five-kilometer course, just missing third-place by a little more than three seconds in a race that featured 152 runners.

Melissa’s Jordan Greer claimed the gold medal with a time of 15:02.90. San Elizario’s Edwin Gomez was second with a 15:07.63 and Canyon’s Samuel Ashley was third with a 15:40.49.

Orangefield junior Maddison Helm, District 22-3A champion and 3A Region III runnerup, finished a strong fifth in the Girls 3A two-mile race, running a time of 12:06.76. Her freshman sister Katelynn Helm also had a nice day, finishing 38th among 151 runners by running a 12:48.41. Little River Academy’s Jenna Brazeal won the title with a time of 11:45.92.

Bridge City Lady Cardinal Kaylen Smith, the District 22-4A champion, finished 98th in her first state appearance in the Class 4A girls race, running a time of 13:15.56. Llano’s Anna Casey captured the gold medal with a 11:39.78. There were 147 runners in the race.

Orangefield freshman Payton Wrinkle wrapped up a wonderful season as he finished a solid 71st among 150 runners in the boys Class 3A race. Vanderbilt Industrial’s Kevin Baez won the race with a sizzling time of 15:29.98.

In the boys 4A race, Silsbee’s David Wright, the 22-4A runnerup, finished a solid 45th with a 16:58.35 clocking.
