Cards hosting winless Lions

BRIDGE CITY — Something has got to give Friday night when the Bridge City Cardinals welcome in the Livingston Lions to Larry Ward Stadium in District 11-4A Division I action.

Both teams will be seeking their first district win as the Cardinals (1-7, 0-3) and the Lions (0-8, 0-3) have struggled throughout the season in trying to put points on the board.

The Cardinals were shut out by Lumberton 34-0 last week while the Lions were blanked 21-0 at home against Little Cypress-Mauriceville.

Bridge City, which has been outscored 270-71 for the season and 108-30 in 11-4A play, could not get their running game going against the Raiders last week as they finished with 182 total yards. Bridge City is definitely the youngest team competing in 11-4A and the smallest school as well as several freshmen have seen extended playing time, especially in district play.

The Cardinals have found a nice passing game of late as quarterback Cace Skinner has passed for nearly 250 total yards in the last two games with his favorite targets being Jackson Tims and Blake Moore.

Opposing defenses have done their best of late in slowing down Cardinal fullback Andy Lara, who has close to 400 yards on the season. That has opened it up a little for tailback Rylan Ply, who had 56 yards against the Raiders last week.

The Cardinals will look to open things up against a Livingston team that has allowed 52.4 points a game.

The Lions have been outscored 419-64 for the season and 156-32 in 11-4A action, including a 87-21 loss at home against Splendora.

Livingston’s defense did show improvement against LC-M last week, limiting the Bears to just seven points in the first half before eventually falling by three scores.

The Lions do have a pair of major weapons in the forms of running back Joe Lewis and receiver Chris Washington, who are capable of taking it the distance on any given play. Linebackers Jonathan Hammond and Jared Seagroves both have played well this season, especially against LC-M last week.

The Cardinals will wrap up their regular season on the road at Splendora next week while Livingston welcomes in Huffman.

In other 11-4A action Friday night, LC-M (3-5, 2-1) visits Huffman (3-5, 1-2) and Lumberton (5-3, 3-0) welcomes in Splendora (7-1, 3-0) in a showdown for first-place.
