Lady Bobcats surge past Diboll in bidistrict

JASPER – Experience and making plays in the clutch lifted the Orangefield Lady Bobcats past the Diboll Lady Jacks in the Class 3A Region III bidistrict volleyball playoffs at Jasper High School Tuesday night.

After letting the first game slip from their grasp a few times, the Lady Bobcats had a huge rally in Game Three and then put away Diboll in Game Four as they snagged a 25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 victory, giving second-year head coach Ashlee Broussard her first playoff victory.

The Lady Bobcats (30-9) now move on to the area round where they will face Anderson-Shiro.

Orangefield received some amazing hitting from the likes of seniors Bailee Click and Devany Crain and junior Faith Fregia to help turn back the young Lady Jacks (26-12).

Fregia finished with a match-high 15 kills while Click had 13 and Crain 10. The Lady Bobcats had 46 kills on the night while Diboll had 35.

Orangefield jumped out to a 12-4 lead in Game One only to see Diboll come all the way back to tie it at 22-22. Orangefield got up 24-22 with a couple chances to win it but the Lady Jacks fought back to tie it and scored the last three points to grab the game.

The Lady Bobcats led Game Two 7-1 only to see the Lady Jacks rally back to as close as 19-18. However, behind some heavy hitting, the Lady Bobcats finished with a flurry, utilizing a 6-1 run to nab the game.

Game Three was close but the Lady Jacks used a flurry to jump up 23-17. Coach Broussard called a timeout and the Lady Jacks did not score again in the game as the Lady Bobcats reeled off eight straight points to nab the game by two.

The Lady Bobcats got behind 11-7 in Game Four but didn’t sweat it as they finished strong, finishing the match off with a 18-6 spurt.

Orangefield finished with 58 services points while Diboll had 42.

Click and Crain each finished with 16 service points with Click getting two aces and Crain one. Fregia had 10 points and three aces. Mackenzie Davis, who along with Tiffany Cianglione, set up the Lady Bobcat offense so well all night, had seven points. Lily Saucedo played excellent defense and had a ton of digs while freshman Madison Greenway contributed six kills.

Anaya Perez paced the Lady Jacks with nine kills while Helene Bolton and Meredith Mitchell added eight apiece while Ari Compean added five. Mitchell and Bre Hernandez had nine points apiece with their services games and so did Compean, who also had a match-high four aces. Maddi Horton added eight points, four kills and three aces.
