Woodville downs Bobcats, 43-14

WOODVILLE — The first-place Woodville Eagles scooted past the Orangefield Bobcats 43-14 Friday night to stay perfect on the season and in District 12-3A Division I play.

The win pushes the Eagles to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in district while the Bobcats slipped to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in district.

The Eagles went up 7-0 with 5:02 left in the first quarter when back Zackary Martin zipped into the end zone from seven yards out.

The Bobcats countered with a nice drive of their own and sophomore quarterback Gunner Jones capped it with a one-yard touchdown run to tie it with 1:44 in the first quarter.

Woodville snared a 14-7 edge late in the quarter when quarterback Reese Shaw connected with Kemo Moran on a 35-yard scoring strike.

The Bobcats seemed to lose momentum when they looked like they were going in to tie things up but they fumbled and the ball went out of the back of the Eagles’ end zone for a touchback.

The Eagles then grabbed a 21-7 edge going into the half when Martin broke free for a 20-yard touchdown gallop with 2:23 in the half.

Woodville went up 28-7 with 10:35 in the third when Trey Hickman got loose on a 17-yard run.

The Eagles went up 35-7 when Jaylon Hyder scored on a 69-yard jaunt.

Orangefield pulled to within 35-14 with 9:24 remaining when Jones teamed up with Kaiden DuBose on a 30-yard scoring toss.

Woodville’s Jacorey Hyder capped the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown run with 4:41 left.

The Bobcats will be back home next week to face the Warren Warriors while the Eagles travel to Kirbyville.

Ion other 12-3A Division I action Friday East Chambers (7-1, 4-1) toppled Buna (6-2, 3-2) 42-20. Anahuac (4-4, 3-2) downed Hardin (6-2, 3-2) 14-12 and Kirbyville (1-7, 1-4) downed Warren (0-8, 0-5).
