BRIDGE CITY — After both teams absorbed tough losses in their District 11-4A Division I openers last week, the Bridge City Cardinals and the Huffman Falcons will square off Friday night at Falcons Stadium seeking their first district wins of the season.
The Cardinals (1-5, 0-1) are coming off a tough 33-14 loss at the hands of Orange County rival Little Cypress-Mauriceville while the Falcons (2-4, 0-1) went to Lumberton and fought the Raiders down to the wire before falling 38-31 in overtime.
The Cardinals will look to get their offense going again after gaining just 138 total yards against the Bears last week.
Costly turnovers hampered the Cardinals early on in their loss to the Bears as they fell behind early and allowed LC-M all 33 of its points in the first half.
The Cardinals are averaging 183 yards a game. Fullback Andy Lara leads the BC ground game with 327 yards but was held to 19 yards in the loss to the Bears.
Bridge City will also try to get quarterback Cace Skinner and running backs Rylan Ply, Deagan King and Gavin Villanueva loose against the Falcons.
The Cardinal defense, which is allowing 361.2 yards a game, will look to slow down the Falcons’ spread offense.
Quarterback Justin Shively runs the ship for the Falcons and has explosive receivers in the forms of Aaron Johnson, A.J. San Miguel, Talon Hair and Austin Niles. Noah Zamora has been solid at tailback for the Falcons, who look to end a two-game losing streak.
The Falcons’ two wins came against Houston Worthing (34-12) and Hardin-Jefferson (18-7).
The Cardinals will return home next week to face Lumberton while the Falcons travel to Splendora.
In other 11-4A action Friday, Splendora is at LC-M and Lumberton hosts Livingston.
