It’s official, Mustangs are state’s all-time best!

WEST ORANGE — It’s official, the West Orange-Stark Mustang football program is the all-time winningest high school football team in the state of Texas after Friday night’s dramatic 24-21 win over the Silsbee Tigers.

So many former players and coaches were at Hooks Stadium Friday night to celebrate the amazing milestone.

Legendary Mustang coach Dan Hooks was part of the celebration as well after the game along with current head coach Cornel Thompson as they sported an amazing banner for the amazing feat.

The Mustangs are now officially 400-97-3 for an astonishing .803 all-time winning percentage.

Steve McCarthy was the first Mustang head coach, leading the program to a 29-10-1 mark from 1977-1980. Hooks led the Mustangs on the field for 29 years, notching a 277-71-2 mark from 1981-2010 and leading the Mustangs to four State Championship Games and winning two. Thompson has been the head man since 2011 and owns a 94-16 mark with four straight State Finals appearances and two state crowns.

Out of the 400 victories, 113 of them have been shutouts. The Mustangs own 16 more shutouts than actual losses.

The Mustangs have made the postseason 29 times and have won 27 district titles. They have played in 94 playoff games, winning 69 of them.

The program has made the State Championship Game eight times, winning four. The Mustangs have been to the semifinals nine times and have made 12 regional finals and 17 area round appearances.
