LC-M’s Peveto, BC’s Smith nab 22-4A CC crowns

VIDOR — It was another waltz in the park for Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Eli Peveto as he claimed his fourth straight district title by capturing the District 22-4A Cross Country Championships at Claiborne Park Tuesday morning.

Peveto literally coasted to victory, covering the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 20.6 seconds, easily outdistancing Silsbee’s David Wright, who was second with a time of 18:09.9.

On the girls’ side, Bridge City’s Kaylen Smith helped power the Lady Cardinals to the girls team title as she won her race by covering 3,200 meters in 13:01.7. Hamshire-Fannett’s Macie Gauthier was second with a 13:48.2.

The top 10 individuals and top three teams all advance to the Class 4A Region III Championships, which will be held Oct. 22.

The Lady Cardinals finished first with 39 points while Lumberton (44) and Hamshire-Fannett (50) will also head to regionals.

Behind Smith for the Lady Cardinals included Carla Rubio (third, 14:06.8), Brooklin Sheffied (seventh, 14:29.6), Riley Thomason (15th, 15:33.4), Ashlyn Dunigan (19th, 15:49.6) and Iris Lobatos (26th, 16:24.2).

Robyn Courmier paced the LC-M Lady Bears, finishing sixth with a 14:27.5. She was followed by teammates Deasia Tippins (18th, 15:46.8) and Blake Martin (29th, 17:02.5).

The Silsbee boys won the team title with 44 points. Bridge City (65) and Hamshire-Fannett (81) also qualified for regionals by placing second and third respectively.

Caden Shaw led the Cardinals boys with a third-place finish with a time of 18:14.9. He was followed by teammates Ethan Borque (11th, 19:37.8), Nathan Rhodes (12th, 19:52.6), Kyler Young (19th, 20:59.5), Kaden Garlaska (20th, 21:10.0) and Adrian Draughn (23rd, 21:35.2).

Behind Peveto for LC-M were teammates Trevor Turner (sixth, 19:05.9), Blake Marshall (16th, 20:24.7, Chase Fischer (21st (21:13.6) and Stephen Kusek (40th, 24:47.2).

Kaleb Istre led West Orange-Stark, finishing 27th with a time of 22:20.6. He was followed by teammates Myron Griffin (28th, 22:26.2), Terron Brown (30th, 22:37.6), Nakai Arnold (33rd, 23:23.2), Damioun Apodaca (36th, 23:47.0), Jordan Johnson (37th, 23:498.0) and Nikio Arnold (42nd, 25:43.1).

The Orangefield boys and girls cross Country teams will compete in the 22-3A Cross Country Championships Wednesday in Warren.
