Golden K Kiwanis news

The Golden K Kiwanis Club installation of 2018-19 officers will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, in the Salvation Army Building Meeting Room, corner of MLK and Strickland in Orange.  Installing Officer will be Rev. Brad McKenzie, Trustee, Divisions 3, 9, 10, and 28, Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis International.  Rev. McKenzie is pastor of the First Nazarene Church in Baytown, Texas.  The public is invited for the ceremony and refreshments.

New officers include Reid Caruthers, president; Dennis Ferrell, president-in-training for 2019; Pat McCombs, secretary; and Vernon Murray, treasurer.  Committee chairs consist of:

Anne Payne, membership and publicity committees; Lois Ferrell and Billy Jack McKinney, Board members; and Karen McKinney and Lois Ferrell, auditing committee.  Outgoing 2017-18 officers include Margaret Light, president, and Anne Payne, secretary.  All are from Orange.

Dr. Arlene Turkel, a professor at Lamar State College, Orange, will be the Golden K Kiwanis guest speaker on Wednesday, October 10, at 9:30 a.m. at the Salvation Army Building

Meeting Room, at MLK and Strickland in Orange.  She will speak about members of Golden K being offered the opportunity to submit short stories or poetry in the LSC-O anthology.  She will also be accompanied by a speaker from the college’s recruiting office who will tell the group of senior citizens about opportunities for them.


Orange County Friends (OCF) news

The OCF October General Meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, at

Southern Charm Restaurant, 1627 Strickland Drive, Orange 77630.  A Dutch treat luncheon will be offered from the menu.  The speaker will be Hannah Colletti, Volunteer and Operations Coordinator, Stark Art and History Venues, who will be sharing news of the various Stark venues, including the newly re-opened Shangri La, with a slide presentation.  Orange County Friends was previously known as Orange Newcomers.  Membership for one year is available for $15 per person, with checks made payable to Orange County Friends.  A directory will be distributed soon.   Activities include Day Bunco, Night Bunco, Party Bridge, Canasta, Book Club, Creative Corner (crafts), and Out and About.  Call or text Carolyn at 409.779.0208 for details regarding membership.  Please RSVP to Anne by text or phone for luncheon at 409.313.7575.

A new activity will begin for OCF on Tuesday, October 16, at 11 a.m. at Tuffy’s in Mauriceville called Games for Gals.  Various board games, cards, Skip-Bo, Uno, and dominoes will be played.  Call or text Diane if interested at 409.988.3243.

The OCF Out and About will have its first field trip for the year on Thursday, October 18, at Shangri La at 10:30 a.m. to view the scarecrows in the Scarecrow Festival in Orange.  Admission is free.  Plan to meet just inside the gate of Shangri La.  The group will decide where to dine for lunch as a group.  Please RSVP to Barbara by call or text to 409.746.1833 for reservation.

The OCF Book Club is moving right along with its second book of the year, “The Madonnas of Leningrad, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, in Luigi’s Italian Restaurant, corner of Strickland and MacArthur Boulevard.  The reviewer will be Diane Grooters.  In September, Grooters reviewed the book, “Ordinary Grace.”  Members eat and take part in the book review each month.  Call or text 409.988.5635 for more information.


American Association of University Women (AAUW) news

AAUW will have its second Galloping Gourmet of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at Tuffy’s Restaurant, Mauriceville, close to the intersection of Highways 12 and 62.  The Dutch treat dinner will offer the entire menu with a special private room for dining.  Please RSVP to Mary by Sunday, October 14, with text or phone at 832.632.4516 so she will know how many to expect.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) news

The William Diamond Chapter of the Orange DAR, will hold its October meeting on Tuesday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Bridge City.

St. Paul’s is located on 1155 W. Roundbunch Road, also known as FM 1442. Hostesses are

Lois Ferrell and Anne Payne.  The speaker will be Jackie Huckabay of Bridge City,

Fresh Start to a Healthier You!

Better Living for Texans a part of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Orange County invites you to join us for A Fresh Start to a Healthier You series. You will learn tips on saving money at the grocery store, food safety, and meal planning. We will be meeting at the Raymond Gould Community Center 385 Claiborne Street in Vidor once a week on Thursdays for four weeks, 11 a.m. to 12 noon, dates are October 4, 11, and 18. Hunter Education Safety Class

Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter Education Safety Class Mon and Tues Oct 15 and 16 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Vidor High School Cafeteria. Must attend both evenings and must register online at Texas Parks & Wildlife website. Certification is required if you are at least 17 years old and were born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, to hunt in Texas. You can become certified at 9 years old. This is not just for hunters, anyone with firearms can benefit from this class.



The Greater Orange Area Literacy Services (GOALS) is now offering Reading, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Graduate High School Education (GED) tutoring to all adults 16 and older at no cost.  Volunteer tutors are willing to meet once or twice a week at various locations.

Do Well Be Well with Diabetes

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension of Orange County is having a free Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes Series.  This is a 5-week series on every Monday in October (Oct. 8, 15, 22, & 29) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Join us in learning how to prevent and control your type 2 diabetes, eat healthy and much more.  Please attend all of the classes to get the full educational benefit.  The classes will be located at the Extension Office on 1442 in Orange.  Call the Extension office at 409-882-7010 to reserve your spot in the class.


Anger Management Classes

Wells of Agape is holding Anger Management Classes from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Life Church Orange located at 18389 Hwy. 62 in Orange (near State Hwy. 62 and Hwy. 105 intersection) Requirement to receive a Certificate of Completion is $30 per person, cash only. VFW Auxiliary Garage Sale


Orange VFW Auxiliary Post 2775 will host their fall garage sale on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the VFW Hall on Highway 87 North(5303 N. 16th St) from 7 am until 2 pm.  Vendors will be able to set up on Friday, October 12th from 5 to 8 pm.  Rental for tables and/or space is $10 each.  Reservations can be made by sending a check for the proper amount to MARY SNAPP; 29 SANDRA LANE; ORANGE, TX 77632.  For further information contact, Mary between 10 AM and 5 PM at 409-697-0380.

Crisis Counseling Program

Southeast Texas Disaster Assistance and Crisis Response Services through Region 5 Education Service Center are offering assistance with identifying needs and resources as well as referrals for available disaster assistance resources and crisis counseling for those struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. CASA informational meeting

The second Tuesday of each month, CASA holds an information meeting to answer questions on how to become a CASA representative. The meetings are at 6 p.m. at the CASA office located at 2120 Gloria Drive in Orange. To reserve a seat, call 409-886-2272.
