In a honor well-deserved, former long-time Bridge City baseball coach Chuck Young will have his namesake on the new and improved upcoming baseball field as the Bridge City School Board approved a plan at the recent board meeting.
The plan is to renovate both the baseball and softball fields.
Each facility will get new revamped with new bleachers, scoreboards, dugouts and a new concession and restroom area.
Each field will have field turf while the outfield will still be grass.
The softball field will be a little deeper. The Lady Cardinals had played on one of the shortest fields in the area that was just 185 feet. The new field will be 15 feet longer at 200 feet.
The demo process will likely begin after the July 4 holiday.
Coach Young passed away this past November.
Young spent almost 30 years as the head baseball coach for the Redbirds from 1968 to 1996 and with it came a ton of playoff appearances and district titles, including a Class 4A State Finals trip in 1992. What a team that was.
He then moved on to Texas City where he had a great deal of success with the Stingarees program and led them to a State Tournament appearance as well.
His squads made the playoffs 31 times and won district titles 15 times as he had nearly 700 wins. It also included six regional finals appearance and 10 regional semifinal appearances.
Coach Young was inducted into the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame back in 2008.
