University of the Incarnate Word baseball student-athlete and former Bridge City Cardinal standout Kyle Bergeron earned Academic All-Southland Conference honors, the league office announced Thursday. Bergeron was named to the first team as a second baseman.

“Kyle put in the time away from the ballpark that it takes to be great in the classroom,” said UIW head coach Patrick Hallmark.

To be eligible for academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have above a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Additionally, they must have completed at least one year at their current institution and have played in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at their position.

Bergeron is a business administration major with a minor in finance.

Bergeron played and started in 55 games for the Cardinals, primarily at second base. He finished the regular season ranked second in the league with 50 RBI. Bergeron also tallied 75 hits, good for fifth in the conference. He averaged 1.36 hits per game, which ranked sixth in the SLC. The Bridge City native was seventh in the league with 46 runs.

Bergeron led the team with 22 multi-hit games, including 15 games with two hits, four games with three hits, and three games with four hits. He also led the team with 13 mutli-RBI games — seven with two RBI, four with three RBI, and two with four RBI. Bergeron had a 13-game hitting streak and reached base in 20 consecutive games. Following the season, Bergeron was selected as the first team All-SLC second basemen.
