First Saturday at Thrift and Gift

Thrift and Gift will host First Saturday on June 2.

As a surprise, clothing items reduced which have never been reduced before. How about all infants and children’s pieces for $1. Women’s and men’s swim suits $1. All long pants including jeans $1, coats and jackets 50 cents, paperbacks 10 cents, patterns 5 cents and more.

We open at 9 a.m. and will close at 1 p.m. at 350 37th Street in Orange. Call 886-7649 for more information.

 

Texas Master Naturalists training

The Sabine Neches Chapter will be conducting a training session this fall for persons interested in becoming Texas Master Naturalists.  The program is open to all persons interested in learning and playing an active part in conservation. Volunteers will receive a minimum of 40 hours of basic training from educators and specialists from places such as universities, natural resource agencies, nature centers and museums. Training topics include interpretation and management of natural resources, ecological concepts, eco-regions in Texas and natural systems management.  Interested persons can visit https://txmn.org/sabine for signup information.

 

Veteran Recognition Program

Orange Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2775 and the Auxiliary present 21 VPR (Veteran Program Recognition) Programs each year and are mandated by National.  The first VPR will be a video commemorating VE DAY on June 6 at 6:30 pm, at the VFW Hall located at 5303 North 16th Street (Highway 87 North).  The public is invited to attend..these videos are short, informative and a way of preserving our Military History.  Some of the VPRs are quite graphic and not suited for very young children. If you are a veteran wishing to join the VFW, please bring proof of service and attend.  There is always someone to help and membership is sorely needed.  June 15, members will be manning a booth at the Cops N Kids Picnic at Claiborne Park from 10-2, handing out flags in recognition of Flag Day.  For further information, contact John or Jeanette Clark at 883-0264.

 

Volunteers Wanted

The Clifton Steamboat Museum is hosting a Volunteer Brunch Thursday, June 21 at 10 a.m. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the Clifton. We are looking for volunteers to greet visitors, help in the gift shop, lead story time, garden, decorate for special events, complete improvement projects and more. Individual and groups welcome. Student volunteers under 14 welcome with a chaperone. We look forward to you joining us however, if you cannot attend, please contact us about volunteering.

 

Memberships available

Memberships in AAUW are available for those with 2-year or 4-year degrees for $65 per year.  Friend memberships for those without a degree are offered for $25 per year.  AAUW is proud of its achievements, including the scholarships, a scholarship dinner with Silent Auction, books contributed to North Early Learning Center to a local AAUW-created program called Book of Their Own, another local AAUW-created program called Library Family of the Year in connection with the Orange Public Library, a monthly book club called Book-Ins, a dining club called Galloping Gourmet, a Christmas covered-dish party, and annual participation in Art in the Park. Years ago, AAUW ran a pre-school for young children and composed several cookbooks for fundraisers, as well as garage sales.  AAUW has been part of the Orange community for 69 years, forming in Orange in 1949.

Run/Walk Series

Sea Rim Striders is holding it’s 2018 Summer Run/Walk Series. Volunteers are needed with prize drawings at end of summer for those who sign up to help! Gatorade, water, pizza and fruit at the finish line for each 5K Run/Walk. Free and open to the public. Schedule for events are listed below:

Become a Certified Texas Master Gardener

Want to be a Master Gardener? Now is your chance! The Orange County Master Gardeners Association will be starting a new class June 7, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Orange County EXPO Center, 11475 FM 1442 in Orangefield. Classes will run each Thursday at this time with the addition of some Saturday classes and/or field trips. There will be several optional out of town overnight field trips. Classes will continue thru September 13. The fee is $100 which will include your Master Gardener training handbook, supplies and speaker fees. Crisis Counseling Program

Southeast Texas Disaster Assistance and Crisis Response Services through Region 5 Education Service Center is offering assistance with identifying needs and resources as well as referrals for available disaster assistance resources and crisis counseling for those struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Horsemanship Clinic 101

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Orange County 4-H will be hosting the Horsemanship Clinic 101 Saturday, June 30, 8 a.m .to 2 p.m. at the Tin Top 2 (T2) Arena, 3810 Old Peveto Road in Orange. Deadline to register is June 20. The cost will be $15 per person and includes meal and supplies. Cogging papers are required to participate with your horse.  Sierra Hutchison, Orange County 4-H member will be teaching basic horsemanship skills and safety around horses. No Stud Horses allowed. CASA informational meeting

The second Tuesday of each month, CASA holds an information meeting to answer questions on how to become a CASA representative. The meetings are at 6 p.m. at the CASA office located at 2120 Gloria Drive in Orange. To reserve a seat, call 409-886-2272.

 

Youth Summer Programs Offered by AgriLife Extension

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Orange County will be offering several programs for youth this summer.  The registration for the programs will be online at orange.agrilife.org and you will select the tab for the program interested in. If you do not have computer access, please call the AgriLife office the day registration opens. Classes fill up quickly so do not wait to register.

Starting in June we will have our Youth Cooking Camp for ages 8-14, June 11-15th, 10 a to 2 pm. The Youth will be cooking 8 recipes a day for 3 day then will have a food challenge on the 4th day and awards on Friday. Cost is $45 per child, limited scholarships available. Cooking camp is limited to 60 youth.  Registration opens online May 1st.

The 3rd Annual Michael Hoke Memorial Outdoor Awareness for Kids is Free with lots of Fun, food and nature will be held June 21st at Claiborne West Park, 9 am to 2 pm. Deadline to register is June 8th online or by calling the AgriLife office.

Registration for July classes will open online June 1st. July will start with Good Table Manners, “Please” and “Thank you” along with Etiquette, this will be a three day class held July 16th-18th, 9 am to 1 pm, Cost is $10 per child with lunch provided. Open to ages 8-18. Youth Canning Class will be held July 19th, 9 am to 2 pm for ages 8-14. Cost will be $25 per child. They will be canning strawberry jam and making homemade bread. Next class will be Sewing 101 for beginners only, July 23rd-25th, 9 am to 2 pm, cost is $20 per person, kids will bring their own lunch and drink.

The last program for the summer will be Clover Kids Camp for ages 5-8, July 31st-August 2nd, 1 pm to 4 pm cost will be $25 per person. Orange County senior citizens meeting

Orange County senior citizens are meeting on the 2nd Monday every month at 9:30 a. m. at Salvation Army Bldg. on corner of MLK and Highway 90 in Orange. Bingo, Prizes, Pot luck Lunch. All are invited to attend. For more information please call, Dermal at 730-5722.

Friends of the Bridge City Public Library meets once a month on the fourth Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Join today for only $5 per year. As a member of the Friends you can help with fundraisers, the summer reading program, decorate Library for the holidays, scrapbook events from the year and Bayou Buddy Storytime.

We’re collecting UPC labels for our Youth Cooking Camp. Please join Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s H.O.P.E. Anger Management Classes

Wells of Agape is holding Anger Management Classes from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Life Church Orange located at 18389 Hwy. 62 in Orange (near State Hwy. 62 and Hwy. 105 intersection) Requirement to receive a Certificate of Completion is $30 per person, cash only. Crochet Class at 6:30 p.m. at Orange First Church of the Nazarene, 3810 M.L.K. Jr. Drive in Orange. The class is in the Dining Room. Please bring your current project. Fundraiser

American Legion Post 49, located at 108 Green Ave. in Orange, will hold a Fried Fish plate lunch fundraiser from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Cost is $9 a plate. The meal consists of fried fish, potato salad, cole slaw, green beans, bread and dessert. Walk-ins are welcome and delivery is available.
