MARBLE FALLS — Little Cypress-Mauriceville freshman golf sensation Jack Burke wrapped up an amazing first season for the Bears as he finished 11th in the Class 4A State Golf Championships on the Apple Rock course at Horseshoe Bay.

After firing a 77 on day one Monday, Burke shot a 81 Tuesday.

Madisonville’s Sam Bennett captured his second straight Class 4A title with a 142 (70-72) while Monahans’ Joey Kirk was second with a 146 (73-73) and Brownwood’s Jeryn Pruitt was third with a 147 (71-76).

Monahans was the overall team champion with a two-day score of 615. Argyle (626) was second and Bullard (639) third.

Burke, the District 22-4A champion, qualified for the State Tournament by placing second at the 4A Region III Tournament at Ravens Nest in Huntsville late last month.

Burke fired a 76 and 74 to take second-place behind state champion Bennett, who took first-place at regionals after firing 71s on each day.

Burke has had an amazing journey this season, including winning seven tournaments while placing second in two others.
