ORANGEFIELD — The Lufkin Hudson Hornets captured Game Two Friday night 1-0 to eliminate Orangefield in the Class 4A Region III bidistrict playoffs at Orangefield High School.
It was another tough loss for the Bobcats, which fell in Game One in Lufkin 1-0 on Wednesday nights as hits were tough to get in the series due to excellent pitching.
The loss ended a superb Bobcat season as Orangefield finished 17-8-1 overall.
Hunter Mayo went the distance on the mound for the Hornets (15-14-1) as he tossed a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking five.
Mayo’s performance offset a superb performance from Orangefield pitcher Mason Gonzales. Gonzales went the distance as as well, scattering six hits while fanning four and walking two.
The Hornets’ lone run came on a RBI double by Benn Penn.
Orangefield’s Blake Bradley pitched a gem as well in going the distance on the mound Wednesday as the Hornets could only scratch in a run, but the Hornets’ were able to hold on with their stout pitching as well to take the series.
